Melbourne’s former Pentridge Prison now a luxury wine cellar
FEATURED ON DOMAIN
You’ve got the Toorak address, the Collins Street office, a Brighton beach box and the Sorrento holiday home. What’s next?
A luxury wine cellar at the former Pentridge Prison might be the new must-have accessory for well-to-do Melbournians.
The infamous bluestone jail in Melbourne’s north was shuttered in 1997, but several of its most historic and significant buildings remain.
These include D Block, which was used as a remand centre and is likely at some point to have temporarily housed many of the prison’s more famous inmates, such as Mark “Chopper” Read, Christopher “Rent-a-Kill” Flannery and Hoddle Street gunman Julian Knight. Ronald Ryan, the last man to be hanged in Australia in 1967, met his demise in D Block and his body is buried in an unmarked grave within the section.
